My name is Laurel. I am a 19-year-old university student currently living in Scotland but originally from the San Francisco Bay Area who mainly shoots 35mm film but occasionally draws and paints as well. I love film photography because it captures a connection between people, spaces, and environments.
I started taking film photos recently, but have had a relationship with art my entire life. I love to explore the bond between the people I photograph and the camera, holding a moment in time with one shot. Both California and Scotland have been influential in my work, but I mainly focus on shooting people.
Most of the time I cannot make art out of something I feel, emotions frustrate me. I am not metaphorical, I cannot put deep meaning into something I make with the intention, I intend to purely create.
I have realized in the past year that my art is humanity. My art does not have a specific meaning, and it does not have to, but it is my specific experience of being a human. It is my experience of love, loss, pain, friendship, knowledge, and who I am. Who I am is my art, and I do not have to make art that is based on presentation, or explanation.
My work reflects both the people who are essential in my life and my emotions at the moment, shaped by who I am as a person and the impact that my environment has had on me. Overall, my work is rooted in the intimacy between myself and the world around me, focused on the people I deeply care about.
I am currently trying to combine my two different styles to make more mixed medium pieces, combining my two different worlds of art while also exploring different formats of film and development processes.
